Suala has two SBD winches on aft coachroof inside canopy cover. Outer for the mizzen, inner for the Main.  One winch on port side aft coachroof to furl the Genoa. Cleat is topside inside the canopy cover. This setup allows sailing with canopy closed to keep out the rain. Easy sailing adjustments and tacking. Highly recommended.

    Thanks Van,
I understand how it works now. Your rebuild article was especially interesting! I was advised to put in a Delrin thrust washer between the cup and the base of the pin, but I now see that this is unnecessary if the bearing surface is at the conical point. I think the problem arose when the cap in Suala’s rudder was dislodged. I will inspect the plastic seating for the cup to check it’s integrity. If it is destroyed I will have to seat the cap with epoxy as I would not be able to find a plastic part to refit into the base. If still functional I will glue the cap in with Sikaflex as you did. Much obliged!

I have a stainless steel folded ladder that loops over the side amidships on the starboard side. It has ball fittings that hook into stainless steel eyes screwed onto the deck. The ladder is easily unhooked and removed folded and stored when not in use. It hangs below the waterline when in place and has two rubber covered support stops under the water that stabilize the steps against the side of the yacht. It is easy to climb up and down and is stable under weight. I was under the impression that the steps were original and came with the yacht. The steps are flat plastic with anti-slip grooves.

I can send a photo when I return to the yacht next week if you wish.

Hi Van, I have a number of photos that I will send you. I am still waiting for a new photo of Suala under sail with cruising chute deployed, taken last week by a friend. Will forward it to you when I get a download from him. I will send the ones I have by e-mail in the meantime.

Congratulations on Vanikoro! My Suala was also sailed in France for a large part of its history. The previous owner brought her accross from Gulf of Lyon by road transport to Largs in Scotland where I bought her in 2007.
Last season I sailed her down the Irish sea to Plymouth then on accross Biscay through Gibralter and into the Med and all the way to Kemer in Turkey where she is now based. The trip took us two months, Force 7’s in the Irish sea and two gales one in Biscay! and the other off the north coast of Sicily. We had to turn back along the Pelopponese due to viloent catabatic squalls off Cape Malea and hid for a few days in Elafonisos until it cleared sufficiently for us to cross the Cyclades and Dodecanese Greek islands. Nevertheless due to our having to beat our deadlines we had to subject oursleves to force sevens along this part of the journey as well. My respect for Suala (built in 1970)and for all the Nicholsons in general, has escalated even higher than I already held for Nicholsons. I too dreamt of owning a Nic 38 since the early 1980’s whilst studying in Britain. The 6 years I have owned Suala have been a pleasure and a labour of love in preparing her for the voyage. She is now in the right place for my wife who prefers the blue friendly warm waters compared to the cold black unforgiving north sea! I wish you many years of joy and “uneventful” sailing. (a friend tells me that good skippers never have stories to tell…. I think I must be a bad skipper!)

I had my Cruising Chute made by Crusader Sails in Poole. I went for the 170%LP rather than the 180%LP http://www.crusadersails.com will have all the info you require. 35′ – 50′ is the size of yacht that my chute dimensions were based on. I have only used it three times since receiving it and have found it to be most enjoyable on each of the occasions used. It sits well and is most beautiful to behold. Crusader make each chute according to the yacht and provide you with a palette in which you can select the colours per panel.http://www.magicpalette.crusadersails.co.uk/Designer.aspx?ID=74da14 is the link for the palette. Their snuffler works well and does not tangle as some other designs apparently do.

    Hi William,

I used to be based at Fairlie Quay but am now in Kemer, Turkey having just completed the journey. I have lkeft a staysail with Sally at Jessail by oversight. You are welcom to see if you can find use for it. It attaches to the mizzen as a second chute. It is old and made of chute sail material. I have never used it. There is another Nic 38 based at Rhu who has a similar staysail and does use it. Look for him at Rhu marina. I am sure he would be most helpful perhaps in other ways as well. Very nice fellow. Brian

Marylin, I have a winch on the aft cabin coach roof port side similar position to the winches on Starboard for the main and mizzen sheets . It is used for the Genoa Furler but could easily be doubled up for tensioning the Tack. A block just ahead of the mizzen shroud like Trevor uses should work. I haven’t tried it but it’s worth a try. Thanks for the advice Trevor. I have just purchased an asymmetrical 270m2 from Crusader sails in UK and have been thinking how to place the running rigging myself. Your solution looks good. I am going to give it a try. Brian – Suala

I have an article of Yachting World October 93 of Chihilli 11 Hull number 119 (initially Circle of Waldringfield)owned then by South African Ludi and Eleanor Luchner. she sailed with a spinnaker and mizzen staysail off the wind doing 7 knots in apparent wind of 15 knots. She had an extra 5feet added to her mast and three feet to her mizzen mast. 130 deg genoa. What sort of performance can one expect from a cruising chute added to a standard rigging?Any personal experience to share?.
