michael bennettParticipantI have found a product called Saba Caulk from a company in the UK which seems to be the product to use. http://www.marineware.com/index.php?option=com_contact&view=contact&id=1&Itemid=123

michael bennettParticipantWelcome Simon, Where does he want his possible 38 to be?
michael bennettParticipantSome photographs always helpful when you can.
michael bennettParticipantI have installed a fuel polisher (diagram avaiable to email) which pre cleans fuel and returns to tank, so very clean fuel to primary double filters. It also enable bleeding when filter change time, which is now double the time it was and they are still very clean filters, but I change anyway, the 12v pump can be switched both for bleeding, saves those indents in thumb from pumping fuel pump, and the return from the polisher can be redirected to feed primaries if mechanical pump fails, I have fitted a new one and kept the old for a spare anyway. Pump works when engine starts, and can also be swiched on when in marina or at anchor.
The cause of all this protection was the result of a engine stop, yes dirty filters, in a busy seaway just outside Santa Teresa di Gallura, Sardinia, with ferries giving me 5 on the horn! no wind, and trying to change the filters with them roaring past and me slopping in the wake, not want to repeat that again. The cause was a fuel load taken on there, I also now use a filling funnel http://www.asap-supplies.com/green/fuel-filling-funnels like that which protects from dirt and water from the provider. Hope this helps, I know Marilyn and Van have done something similar.
michael bennettParticipantI currently have porcelain, pretty strong, would be interested in a replacement in porcelain or china, I only use them when moored or at anchor. We eat from plastic when sailing ugh.. much more civilised from china I think, especially with visitors. Also have glass for wine to, take good care of them, no more breakages than at home.
michael bennettParticipantHello and welcome to this association of Nic 38 owners, be good to hear from you at any time.
Mike
michael bennettParticipantHi Marilyn,
Glad you are back hope you had a good trip. When i click the link above ‘reason’ it takes me here: http://www.internetcorkboard.com/search.php?q=reason is it supposed to ?
Mike
michael bennettParticipantThat looks a mess! but nothing a good engineering workshop could not reprduce, I certainly would not suggest fitting new bushes to the old one from what the photograph shows.
He could try here: http://www.asap-supplies.com/marine/flexible-couplings-for-propeller-shafts I have found them a good company to deal with.
If this help is successful we deserve his joining us!
michael bennettParticipantThe new tap positioning looks good, well done, certainly more welcome room in that area.
Like me you still have the Vaillant water heater, mine is in excellent condition, a piece of history which works very well both in the galley and the heads basin and shower. I had to do some maintenance on mine as it was not lighting properly or staying alight as it should, stripped the regulator down to take a look, the membrane seems stretched so took some photos of everything and sent to the company, they were very helpfull, if not a little surprised, as they informed me it is the first model they made! they were not aware any were still in service. They kindly sent me a packed of membranes, which were from a later model as non avaialble for mine, which needed a small modification to use, just another hole in the edge to fit existing screw positions. If you need a spare membrane let me know.
michael bennettParticipantHello Colin, welcome to our association, we all look forward to hearing from your long experience with a Nic 38.
Mike
michael bennettParticipantDoes the bleach not ‘taste’ even after purging it on return?
michael bennettParticipantWelcome to our group Roy, I am confident you will find very helful and informative in the future, good luck finding the number I am sure Jeremy will find it if anyone can.
michael bennettParticipantOne of the not so usual culprits, and thanks to Richard many more possibilities also.
Generally speaking if you provide clean diesel, to clean filters, and the lift pump works, then air is the most common of faults which created the symptoms you experienced, hunting as it cannot burn air, non start because of air, hope all goes well from now on.July 14, 2011 at 18:59 in reply to: Welcome to Jean-Claude Limasset, owner of Vanikoro hull #3 #9581
michael bennettParticipantWelcome to our association of Nic 38 owners. Mike
michael bennettParticipantLook forward to seeing those photos.
Must admit I do not have any signs of ‘slump’ whether a PO sorted it I have no idea, but looks fine both from the aft cabim window and from outside.
I have a teak deck which i know was recorked, have some small areas now where corking failed, anyone done repairs and if so what with.
Mike
michael bennettParticipantHave you checked the diesel and bled?
michael bennettParticipantWelcome Tom, hope you post here for all our benefit.
Fair winds Mike
michael bennettParticipantI feel confident to say it is a diesel problem, maybe some gung still in a line possibly. More likely from the symptoms to be air in the diesel, possibly unseated filter seals or not tighttened correctly.
I wouls start at the begining, reseat each filter, make sure clean and tight, bleed and bleed again both the low and high pressure sides, low at the final engine filter, and high at the distributor pump.
Good luck not required, just regular maintenance, we are all guilty of that so you are not alone.
One more thing, remove the air filter and make sure it is clean the engine likes to breath to.
michael bennettParticipantDreadfull story, must say most unlike American companies I have dealt with.
Would suggest contacting them again, go to the top of the tree this time, and make sure they are aware, that unless support to resolve is forthcoming, you will publish your experience with them in every boaty magazine and publication you can, purely based on the facts of your experience with the company and its products.
One thing they do not like is bad publicity, stick to the facts in the articles, stating what you did and their response to you, if you have names use them.
Worth giving them some hastle, you certainly have suffered enough.Mike

michael bennettParticipantI repacked mine using 5/16, not to sure from where I had the info, but it fitted correctly, no leaks.
Mike
michael bennettParticipantHi Everyone,
I as on previous blog indicated replaced my Neco electronic control unit with a Simrad AP22 controlling the retained Neco Drive Unit shunt series motor, modified to accept the Simrad digital signals.
This was done with the very generous help and guidance of Daniel from the Physics department in a Universty in Rome, who speaks fluent English (thank god my Italian would never be up to it) I was lucky he was recommened to me, but it is something anyone can do as I have proved! if anyone wants the precise method complete with diagrams and photos it is readily available.
Subsequent to installation Daniel has found a source of new relays to replace the existing ones, virtually identical in all respects, made by the successors who took over the manufacturer of the originals, a good design continued and improved.
I have made Peter aware of them as like mine, his main relay contacts, though still working are seriously pitted, and time for replacement.
