15 kg Rocna replaced 15 kg CQR, after the latter dragged. Also different colours per 10 meters of chain with blobs of that colour-code visible on the deck next to anchor position.

Good luck as you deal with/enjoy the Pacific. Re starters, I am going to get a spare. I think the chems used when the motors are cleaned often causes a deterioration in the ‘marinisation’ quality of the starter metal. The guy who cleaned mine will let me have one for £100/ $120 US, but I will buy new & hope the metal is more virile in anew one! At least they are relatively to get on/off and McLube is something to keep the metal marinised [of sorts]
Ciao

Interesting what you say, as always. I did drill the hole but it is plugable to contain oil spills etc. I got my ‘newly serviced’ starter out again today as it was already rusted & the bendix would not slide along the shaft to engage the flywheel. I am now considering Kurust then thin Primocon paint to try & keep the gear rust-free. I wonder if an always-engaged starter would be possible on a 4108m, thus eliminating the need for the bendix to slide along the starter shaft.
Any ideas on this last point?

If I were you, I’d head into the wind to reef, every time. It means a change of direction, but saves time in the long run.
Cheers

The insurance Co may well scrap it, which would be a shame.

2 pics from Aquarius [#100] furling genny setup. No name on the furling unit, but it works well. Wire furling down port side under the rail, with winch on rear coachroof. [Ideally, the wire should enter via lower section of winch]. In the process of converting the wire to dyneema this winter haulout.
September 10, 2018 at 20:51 #26391John TylerParticipantI have 2 forstays on Aquarius & assumed this was std on Nic 38s. One [the LHS] has a furling system, using an enclosed wire [4-5mm] going back down the port hand-side [just inside the rail] to the cockpit & a winch on top of the rear coachroof – right of sliding hatch looking aft. It makes single-handed sailing easier [& I can send photos].

System works well. Can send a photo.

Re Jacky’s question:
I am a member of Poole Yacht Club in Dorset. There are local marine surveyers eg Andrew Simpson in Poole [Tel: 01202-670754].
I have Aquarius [hull No 100], moored in Poole harbour and would be able to offer advice as I bought my Nic 38 in 2012 & had it delivered to Poole from Portugal.
I have had it done up by local marine specialists. My email = jtyler4@ntlworld.com & mobile = 07591-643-726.
I’d recommend advertising it on Apolloduck
If you want to edit this reply and only give Jacky my contact info, go ahead.
September 25, 2017 at 11:51 #26162John TylerParticipantI did get a saloon control panel fitted on Aquarius & there are currently 2 Nic 38s in the UK going for £27K approx
September 10, 2017 at 15:19 #26160John TylerParticipantCurrent [2017] value seems to be between £25K to £38K, with more at the lower end. mayber a sign of the [post-crisis] times? Also there are about 5 up for sale as I type this.
September 6, 2017 at 21:33 #26159John TylerParticipantGot a steel one fitted under the stbd forepeak bunk, with a macerator in the tank and a switch in the head, showing level & pumpout option. Amazing that the EU still does not insist on them being fitted.
September 6, 2017 at 21:27 #26158John TylerParticipantI recently had an engine change – still the 4108, but a recon. The stern gland needed greasing after the first few hours & is now OK. The danger of not greasing [for me] was that the ingress of seawater into the rear bilge was causing the auto bilge pump to come into play every 30 mins & thus could have drained the batteries. The guys who did the replacement engine did not prime the greaser but told me that the stern gland would need attention as the new prop gear bedded in.

Hull No 100 – UKMarch 27, 2017 at 12:37 #26054John TylerParticipantHi Marilyn
I will start a new thread for Cutlass bearing on the site, but your reply here made me think. I am replacing the cutlass bearing [holding the prop shaft just before the actual propellor]. My marine engineer says he has not seen a Cutlass bearing like the one he took out of Aquarius – hull Number 100. Any ideas as to whether there is a standard bearing on the Nic 38s. The engine is a Perkins 4108 as usual. My engineer is going to attempt a replacement asap, but any info gratefully received her [UK].
Cheers
