I removed mine some time ago as it had a lot of crevice corrosion. I have made up a mould of the stem head to give to a fabricator to have a new one made. It came off pretty easily as far as I remember but was a bit of a mess under the flat area on top. Repaired now but awaiting finishing.

My boat had a wheel driven device that is not man enough and keeps stripping the drive belt. Could you email some pictures (downindevon@live.com), especially of the drive unit as I think they drive a chain? I imagine you have no idea as to whether it all works or not? Did you remove it and what did you replace it with? Sorry about so many questions, but I have been trying to resolve this without spending a fortune for some time!

The heat exchanger is part of the exhaust manifold. The grey coloured disc with lugs at the front of the long blue rectangle is the filler cap for the fresh water cooling. Inside that rectangle is the tube stack that is the heat exchanger. It sounds as though you have a remote heat exchanger mounted at the front of the engine. That being so, you may be able to mount it elsewhere to ease access to the pump.

I would have thought that the pump can be mounted whichever way you want as it self primes. As for the Speedseal kit the key part of the kit is the hand tighten screws so buying them at $10 a pair (spares) might be a way forward, albeit expensive, as I have not been able to find a six screw version from Speedseal.

At the moment the only electrical items connected on board are the fresh water pump and new led cabin lights both on temporary connections. I have fitted two large golf cart 6v batteries (domestic supply) + one large 12v battery for the windlass in the seat locker immediately behind the main mast. The engine starter battery is a fairly small one fitted quite close to the starter motor. I have room to increase the number of golf cart batteries should the need arise. The batteries were all in the port cockpit locker which seemed a lot of weight that ought to be lower in the boat and central. I haven’t decided yet where to fit a distribution panel but it won’t be at the nav desk as that has gone in favour of more space in the saloon. If your existing battery cables to the panel are the same size as the starter motor cables they can be left as they are and new ones added from the panel to the new battery location at the base of the mast via the seat lockers or under the floor.
John.June 10, 2013 at 14:48 #13671John ArthurParticipantI think Federico may be refering to the seat that some have made up to sit at the wheel. The way he has put his question though has prompted me to pose a question that I have been pondering for some time. As the rudder post does not protrude above the deck behind the mizzen unless an emergency tiller is deployed is the Nic38 actually a yawl? It’s completely academic of course, just interesting! For what it’s worth my boat has no provision for an emergency tiller above the deck and has cable steering.
Regards to all, John.September 13, 2012 at 10:42 #12231John ArthurParticipantHi. I am interested in the beaching legs and possibly headsails. Can you email me at downindevon@telco4u.net with further details on these items and also where you are.
Regards, John.June 30, 2012 at 12:07 #11971John ArthurParticipantThank you for your welcome Marilyn. I’m not sure if it is the boat or me that I was indicating that were on their “last gasp” but either way we are both OK. We have renamed Sonatina “Blue Skye” and her first task is to take us to Skye on the West coast of Scotland this summer as I was brought up there and learned to sail in Soay harbour 50 years ago. I have had her ashore for the past 3 weeks to carry out urgent work to seacocks and generally make good a general lack of maintenance. We will sail her this summer and start serious refurbishment over the winter lay up period.
I hope to be able to call on the knowledge base of the forum to bring this fine boat back to her former glory.
Regards, John. -
