ParticipantHi Guys,
Erm, one has to keep in mind, the size and power of the mizzen sail itself. To my mind it seems much like a dinghy sail, therefore I go for a similar rig tension. Whilst we were in the process of purchasing our boat, we looked and had Sea Cale surveyed. Our man was very thorough and pointed out the distorted deck beneath her mizzen mast! Now, to my mind, the deck structure beneath the mizzen is supported by the main mast backstay tension. One can not theorise about the cause of Sea Cale’s problem but I’m guessing, too much rig tension and insufficient backstay tightness of her main mast, led to the aforesaid problem, which was also allowing moisture ingress, with all those assorted issues!
Happy bottle screw twisting.

ParticipantHi Guys,
Well seeing as we don’t live in a perfect world, I don’t worry about it too much. I find Nicolisa sails about fine with up to 40 metres of chain heaped on the foredeck. The raised scupper seems to retain it just fine, on any point of sail and within reason, sea conditions. Such is the beauty of the nic 38! When time and space allows, one then shuffles back and forth, flaking the chain within the locker as desired. I must say that I think 8 mil or five/sixteenth chain a little light, for a vessel of such a stature!! Happy anchoring.

ParticipantHi Olllie,
I suggest you contact the race committee, not sure about how the LOA of a Nic38 fits into there requirements but as the class is well known and recognised, some special dispensation may be available reference hull design and cockpit height above sea level!
Best of luck, Kari and Lawrence

ParticipantHi Gerard,
I’m sorry nobody has replied to you earlier, we are in the process of buying Nicolisa and intend to fit an Hydrovane system. I know that Alexina of Shoreham has or had one, as have been provided with photo’s by Hydrovane. There appears no need to remove the davits. I would suggest you contact them if you are fitting one of their systems, it matters little if you bought it second hand.
Best of luck but your problem is probably sorted by now anyway!

ParticipantHi Jeff,
Yes, many thanks for that info, Marilyn had provided the hull number. She also has the owners info, no 6 and current owner Jon Chapman, don’t know about number 5!
