Thanks for your reply which is helpful and I will study it and see if it enables us to progress. We are lucky as we don’t have your corrosion issues and I believe our problems are the stiff rudder, sloopy join between the upper and lower rudder stock and excessive play in the steering box.
DOES ANY OWNER KNOW HOW EASILY THE RUDDER SHOULD MOVE?ours is disconnected from the steering system and the top section of the rudder stock and is still stiff.
We are trying to loosen it up.
Currently we are trying to remove the steering box, any details you have of this would be really helpful.
will keep you posted on progress.

I am very happy to sell “Vanikoro” to a British one,…but a little bit desappointed to know that he is intending to change her name!
“Vanikoro” is the name of the island in Pacific Ocean where La Pérouse ( the French Cook) wrecked with “La Boussole” and died and it is a very “in demand” name for a pleasure boat in France…
But, I know, there are the Channel and Napoléon beetwen us!
As I am concern, I have in fact an ancestor who was officier in the Navy at Nelson’s times ( Edward Nickoll); Her frigate ( “Hussar”) wrecked on Sein Island in 1804, he was prisoner in Verdun, … and he married my grand-grand mother after the war in 1814. He carried on his career in the R.N., with his family in East of France, where he was buried.
Good wind, however, to Graham!

France (previous owner of “Vanikoro”)jean-claude, the more time I spend on Vanikoro the less I feel like changing her name so I will probably keep her as Vanikoro

I don’t envisage such far flung adventures but hope my family and grandchildren will enjoy pottering and cruising on vanikoro and that we,too have tails to tell like yours, best wishes, GrahamFebruary 28, 2013 at 12:58 #13161GrahamKParticipantHi Trevor,
looking through the internet I have selected a surecal 22 litre model which is 550mm long x 340mm diameter and comes complete with a stainless steel saddle which I think will mount in the big space under the port locker outboard of the engine where there is a wooden bulkhead as you describe. it will be intersting to see your photos to confirm my thoughts. Apologies for the vagueness but I am just getting to know Vanikoro and I seem to have so much to do before i can get her back in the water. At the moment I am trying to prioritise jobs and hot water is in the top 10. many thanks for your help, GrahamFebruary 20, 2013 at 18:26 #13121GrahamKParticipantHi Trevor, thanks that would be really useful. I am going to measure up to see if I can get a calorifier in the position you recommend. It looks a bit tight as we have a volvo d2-55 engine and the exhaust waterlock system is also fitted on the port side of the engine. I would enclose a photo but not sure how to do that.
