What is the correct dimension of the packing material for the packing gland?

We’re getting ready to haul Rainshadow, and for the first time, we are going to replace the packing in the shaft packing gland. We’d like to get the packing material on order beforehand – but we don’t know the proper size to get.

Does anyone know what dimension is required?

I repacked mine using 5/16, not to sure from where I had the info, but it fitted correctly, no leaks.

2 tips
you can hammer packing smaller no problem
dont tighten till back in water let it drip for a while if to tight it will score shaft and burn
