Ron Bramley joins us from the Gold Coast Queensland Australia. He sent an email asking to join our group, and wrote:

Ron says :Our first Nic. 38 ‘mauna kea’ was purchased from a German couple in 1974 when June and I met them in Aust, they were half way thru a circumnav. We joined them in Palma Mallorca to complete the purchase and cruised the Balearics for 3 years . . . mauna kea was Polynesian for ‘enchanted bird’ and the name was carried over to our next 38,purchased in Queensland.It now gets more exciting !!!??? more next week

Would that be the boat of Beate Kammler’s “Komm, wir segeln um die Welt” book about her circumnavigation? (in German, available at Amazon)

Beate sounds like a sporty girl in the book. I seem to remember her describing herself at the outset of the journey as “I was 25 years old and ‘durchtrainiert'” – what would that be in English – thoroughly fit? I also recall that both she and her husband had their appendixes profylactically removed before their journey (hope this is understandable in English)…

BTW Arild, Following your link to her website…Yes, Beate DID look ‘thoroughly fit’ as we say, & still looks pretty fit even now.! Your translation was ‘spot-on’.

Thanks to Arild & Jeff for their prompt response , you have both contributed and
helped us recall a lot of happy memories. The Kammlers were a tremendous help to us when we took over in Palma . . . taking us on a 6 day familiarisation cruise to make sure we were comfortable with Mauna Kea . . . Peter Kammler built another yacht,sailed her to New Zealand and retired to become a farmer . . . we loved the Balearics ,cruised Ibiza/French Riviera/Monaco etc before selling to return to Australia.Our next 38 was discovered in Brisbane Aust.however then came disaster. . . more to come!!!!!????

Dear Ron, Delighted to hear from you but realise I have you as Owning 38/26 MAUNA KEA again from 1992 and then planning to go from Sydney to Canada but this was obviously a different MAUNA KEA. I have another note that it might have been No 67 originally SAMMY BOY but would be very interested to hear more. The Kammlers were good friends. Jeremy.

Hi Ron, I have a Nic 42 in Scarborough QLD. .
I sailed her here in 2004 from Turkey I have to sadly replace the non compliant Eno stove and though a chat might help me decide .You might have encountered this situation at some point in time ?
