Having made the mistake of touring the West Coast of the USA and not advertising our intentions and missing out on visiting other Nicholson 38s in the area we do not intend to repeat our mistake.

We are currently in the Dominican Republic and over the next two months will cruise through the Bahamas to the East Coast of the USA, probably arriving in South Carolina in late May. We would love to meet other Nicholson 38 owners in the area so please contact us.

Peter,

I’m planning on sailing up to the Caribbean next year and after the relaxed way of doing things in Brazil I got to thinking about your encounter with the officials in Sint Marten. For flares (and presumably other safety equipment) is it simply a matter of – if they’re on board they have to be in date – or is there a requirement to have a specific number of flares, smoke floats and other bits of safety equipment?

Would I be likely to need a paper list of all my equipment and expiry dates?

Hi Peter,

I suspect they were very pleased to find we have some safety equipment at all. They did not check expiry dates too closely. It being the Dutch Antilles there is no where that you can find out what their regulations are, they have no website. As long as veryting looks shipshape and Bristol fashion you should be OK.

Many thanks Peter – I’ll be sure to be shipshape and Bristol fashion (tho’ many years ago when I was an apprentice at sea the ship’s bosun told me that shipshape and Bristol fashion meant ‘everything on top and f… all to hand!).
