ParticipantVanikoro has the original 2 speed winches fitted(I believe) which I want to replace with 2 speed self tailing ones for ease of handling. Has anyone replaced theirs and can offer advice of make/model/type to buy.

PatParticipantHello Graham. When I purchased Sea Thrift in 2009 she was fitted with Lewmar 43 two speed self tailing winches. The have served me well and are easy to service. Hope this helps, regards Pat.

ParticipantRhapsode’s Lewmar 42ST primary winches are approaching the end of their life. I read that others are now using 40ST and 46ST.
Can anyone comment on their experience with both these or any other winches installed in recent years please?
Man thanks,
Peter

David and FelicityParticipantWe fitted a pair of Harken 40.2 STA winches a couple of years ago. They were relatively easy to fit and work beautifully. So much easier to use than the old ones. The 40.2 seems to give plenty of mechanical advantage, so I don’t think you need anything larger

ParticipantP.S. I should have asked – what size Genoa are you using?

ParticipantI’m one of the co-owners with David and Felicity, the Genoa is a 133% on a roller furler. The new winches are a really good investment. We bought ours from Australia and even with the import and VAT charges etc it was still significantly cheaper than buying then from the UK.
