Since we posted last year we have decided to replace our Neco 692 autopilot that is part of our hydraulic steering on I Wanda (Nicholson 40 PH). Has anyone done this? The Neco electric motor connects to the hydraulic steering system by a short chain to the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic system includes a Wagner Series 700 Type N and has 3 hydraulic pumps (one for the inside steering, one for the outside helm and one for the autopilot). We would like to keep the integrity of the hydraulic steering while still replacing the autopilot component(s) and would thus want a power unit that connects to the hydraulic pump via a chain drive. Does anyone know of an autopilot that has a chain drive option?

S/V I Wanda, hull 18Apparently the Nicholson 40 steering is quite different than the Nic 38.
The Nicholson 38 does not have hydraulic steering as built. Instead, it uses Matheway steering, as discussed here:

So … also Autopilot will work using “hydraulic power and control”…
In a nutshell…:
turning the rudder, it will actuate a pump which will push the oil in a piston (through pipes) and the piston will move the rudder.
The autopilot, through its own pump, will interface with this hydraulic system
I will update you in the next weeks… but I think it will be a good system (I hope…. )
