Charging indicator on control panel.

Hello,

I have an indicator on my engine control panel which lights up when ignition on and goes off when revs get to around 1200, the problem is after i have switched the engine off and removed the key it flickers on and off, the only way to stop it completely is to disconnect the small lead from the back of the alternator, at which point the flickering stops.

When i leave the boat i usually disconnect it as part of my leaving the boat routine, would prefer to find out why it does this and to cure it, has anyone had a similar problem, or any suggestions as to what may be causing it.
