    I’ve just come down the mast after removing the starboard spreader arm (part of the general re-rigging project). It’s attached by a 1/4 inch bolt. Interestingly, the nut is retained by a split washer only. Might be worth checking this routinely on your mast inspections.

    However, what really amazed me was the bolt, probably the original 38 year old one. It’s a 1/4″ x 2.5″ stainless steel bolt. It’s really bent! It must have been subjected to some pretty strong forces to do that. By the spreader of course – but the spreader looks perfect, no sign of abuse!

    This sort of thing really makes you realize that our boats – Rainshadow in our case – has a whole history of their own, that we only get occasional glimpses into.

    i realy hate stainless see the crevis corrosion your bolt was just about to fail
    replacing stainless parts not inspection as they look ok visably regulary is a must
    at most 5 years
