About racepassage

I have 'Race Passage", hull 117 built 1973. The first owner Mr. Coombs of Victoria BC took her to the 'Med' for 5 years based ,I believe, in Malta then sailed over to Halifax, NS then trucked to BC. As 3rd owner bought her in 1995 and spent 5 yrs in refurbishment then a 2 yr cruise from Vancouver to the west coast, Mexico and return. The refurbishment was quite extensive with a 'mini' osmosis job and complete awlgrip paint job to the deck and house. I left the hull alone as the jelcoat is in good condition and , I must put on my list, is due for a good 'cut and polish' this summer. Removed the davits as for coastal cruising tow a dinghy and for Mexico took an inflatable. The interior is original although we did recover the cushions. One day I will do something with the headliner as it is failing in some places. Still have the B&G log and depth sounder although the log is temperamental., the Sailor VHF is just taking up bulkhead space. Pulled out the auto-pilot(Neco? and still have the motor somewhere) and installed Simrad AP 20 which never fails. Also have Simrad chartplotter and radar and for the cruise installed Icom VHF and SSB and Foruno Navtex Changed the batteries and found that by only moving battery box aft end 1/2" (a bonus) could exactly fit 4 golf cart batteries. Mechanically replaced gatevalve throughhulls with ball valves and totally rebuilt the Perkins 4108(no biggie) and the TMS gearbox.(now that was a challenge and that's only the cost of parts!). Totally rebuilt the 2 baby blake heads- Installed Hydrovane (works great) and Aerogen 4. One interesting 'reno', in Mazatlan, well known for it's stainless steel trades, replaced the upper lifeline from pushpit to the side gates with 1"s/s rails. Easy to install by removing the plastic stanchion caps and what a difference it makes on the afterdeck on a cold dark night! It would also be handy for the long distance cruiser to attach solar panels. So all in all- I can say that I have had no problems with her on the cruise even in sustained winds off the Washington/Oregon coast of F.7/8 and looking forward to the next trip.
